On January 21, 2012, the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm celebrated the 28th anniversary of the life and death of their Foundress, Mother Angeline Teresa McCrory, Servant of God, at St. Teresa’s Motherhouse, Germantown, NY. The day was blanketed by a snow storm which would have been manageable for many if it was not for the ice it brought. Some of our expected guests could not make it including our Principal Celebrant, His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York. Celebrations in January are always risky weather-wise but taking risks was the hallmark of the life of our Foundress. In 1929, when the nation’s economy hit its lowest point because of the Depression, Mother Angeline with her six Companions, left the Congregation they loved and founded the soon to be known Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. December 21st opened a new page in our Congregation’s life! At a private ceremony held at St. Teresa’s Motherhouse Chapel, Sr. Heather Lukose and Sr. Catherine Hinkle, were invested with the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel thus canonically becoming Postulants! The Carmelite Sisters are happy to have them in their midst especially in this joyful season of Christmas and offering a wonderful start to the New Year.
Sr. Catherine Hinkle
Sr. Cathie was born in Jackson, Michigan, the youngest of eight living siblings. Her parents were married 65 years before her mother passed away in March 2008. Sister Cathie acquired part of her Catholic education with the Felician Sisters. Sister lived in Italy for many years doing some social service work and then moved to Aurora, Illinois in 1997. Sr. Cathie is a Certified Nursing Assistant and a Certified Phlebotomist. She holds an Associate Degree from Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
When Sr. Cathie was asked what drew her to Carmel and the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm in particular, she wrote: “Carmel is a life of contemplation in action, love for Our Lady and a strong Eucharistic prayer life. I was drawn to working with the elderly with respect, conscientiousness, and joy. The Sisters wear a traditional habit and the Community has an acceptance of older vocations.”
Sr. Heather Lukose
Sr. Heather was born to a very traditional Catholic family in India. She has four brothers and two sisters all of whom are currently living in Bronx, New York. Both her parents are deceased. She came to the United States through her brother in March 1993. She then pursued her education completing a Pharmacy degree in Long Island University College of Pharmacy. She has worked as a licensed pharmacist in many facilities in New York.
Sr. Heather thought of religious life in her teenage years but decided to ignore the attraction at the time. In the course of her professional life, she enjoyed interacting with people and learned more about human suffering, giving her an insight about life. Sister attended a discernment weekend at Saint Teresa’s Motherhouse in 2010 and then pursued the road to the religious life in our Congregation.
We wish Sr. Cathie and Sr. Heather many happy and blessed years in Carmel, and may Mary, Mother and Queen of Carmel, bring them both to the fulfillment of their holy vocation!

December 17-25
“Adorable Infant Jesus, you not only humbled yourself to assume our human nature, but chose also to come to us a little child, weakest and most defenseless among us. Teach us , then, to learn the real greatness of humility, and that human strength is made perfect in weakness by your divine aid.
Lovable Infant Jesus, have mercy on us and help us in our need. Let us rely alone on God, our most provident Father, who watches over us always. By your grace may we approach our heavenly Father in confidence, with a trust like that of a little child. Admirable Infant Jesus, have pity on our littleness and weakness and assist us by your divine power in our present necessity. Please help us today to reverence all life, and for your sake to love all living things which your goodness created and your coming recreated. Amen.
V: Lord, you made us little less than the angels.
R: You have crowned us with your glory and honor.
Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace and King of the Universe, you chose to come among us as a helpless Infant in order that we might all approach you more readily, confidently and without fear. In your goodness, Divine Infant, manifest your power to all, preserve us from sin and bring us safe at last into your heavenly company. Amen.”

“As Religious, this Season of preparation for Christmas must mean more than Christmas cards, presents and parties. All these things are expression of the joy that is ours because of the great event that took place on Christmas night- the birth of Christ! In remembering everyone else, do not forget Him. The gifts He wants are the precious gifts of fervor and fidelity.”
Mother Angeline Teresa, Servant of God Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters
