Sr. Mary Elizabeth Marciano, O.Carm.- R.I.P

Sister Helena - Wednesday, January 07, 2015

Sister Mary Elizabeth Marciano, O.Carm. died very suddenly on January 7, 2015, in the 49th year of her religious life.  Although she carried the cross of illness for many years, the Lord came for Sr. Mary on a day and at an hour least expected to take her Home to His Father’s House.

Sr. Mary was born on April 19, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY and entered the Congregation on September 8, 1966.  She professed first vows on March 19, 1969 and final vows on June 28, 1975. Her first mission was St. Joseph’s Manor, Trumbull, CT (1969-1979) where she graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Master’s Degree in Social Work.  Appointed the Vocation Director in 1979, Sr. Mary was stationed at Avila for several years (1979-1991). After her time as Vocation Director, she was assigned to Administrative positions at Ozanam Hall, (1991-2006), Teresian House, (2007-2010) and St. Patrick’s Manor/Carmel Terrace (2010-2013).  Sr. Mary transferred to Mary Manning Walsh Home on October 9, 2013 and has been utilizing her social work training by assisting in the Social Service Department there.  A member of the Board of Directors of the Avila Institute of Gerontology for several years, Sr. Mary was the Chairperson of the Jubilee Committee that planned the AIG’s 25th Jubilee in 2013.

In addition to her many years of compassionate ministry to the elderly, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Marciano will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, and love of the New York Mets!  Although she struggled with her own poor health, she brought humor to many difficult situations and kept the Sisters laughing on numerous occasions. Sr. Mary beautifully arranged many a table for Community celebrations and is now enjoying the eternal banquet with her Lord in Heaven.

I spent 3 years with Sr. Mary Elizabeth when I was stationed at Avila. She always brightened the day. In addition she always knew how to get any thing done; not just done, but quickly and with such patience that I just thought she did these things all the time. I learned so much working and living with her.

Having begun life in Carmel in the same group of the Holy Spirit, I recall "Sr. Vincent" with fond memories and recall of meeting over the years where he kind spirit was always present. My condolences to the community on your loss in this life and yet, your consolation of continued kindness through her advocacy for you.
