Sr. Christine Mary Keefe, O.Carm.- R.I.P

Sister Helena - Thursday, November 27, 2014

Sister Christine Mary, O.Carm. went home to the Lord in the 61st year of her religious life.  She passed away peacefully at Garvey Manor on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 with the Sisters at her bedside, and having been visited by Mother Mark, Sr. Patricia Margaret, Sr. Mary Robert and Sr. Ann McCartney the previous evening.

Born in Washington, D.C. on January 24, 1931, Rita Margaret Keefe entered the Congregation on February 2, 1953, and professed first vows on September 11, 1954.  Following some brief early assignments, she was stationed at Carroll Manor, Hyattsville, MD (1957-1964 &1968-1972) where she trained as a Registered Nurse, and at Sacred Heart Manor, Philadelphia, PA (1964-1968).  Entrusted with greater responsibilities, Sr. Christine was appointed the Superior/Administrator of St. Patrick’s Residence, Joliet, IL (1972-1982), and it was she who initiated the fund-raising dinners that continue to this day at St. Patrick’s Residence, Naperville.  She was also Superior/Administrator of Carmel Richmond, Staten Island, NY (1982-1987), Superior at Teresian House, Albany, NY (1987-1991), Administrator of Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre, PA (1991-1994) and Administrator of St. Rita’s Home, Columbus, OH (1994-1998).  On January 10, 1998 Sr. Christine received her final Obedience to Garvey Manor, where in recent years she endeared herself to many through her ministry as the greeter/receptionist at the entrance to Our Lady of the Alleghenies Residence.

When she was in good health Sr. Christine enjoyed cooking for the Sisters, and was always cutting out articles from newspapers/magazines to either save or give to others she thought would be interested in the topic she had read about.  A faithful daughter of Mother Angeline may Sr. Christine Mary, who celebrated the Feast of Christ the King as her own feast day, now be “led in with joy and gladness, as she enters the palace of the King.”  (Ps. 45:15)
