Sister M. Virginia of St. Joseph, O.Carm.

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Sister M. Virginia of St. Joseph, O.Carm. whom the Lord called Home on the night of September 16, 2015, in the 60th year of her religious life, her Diamond Jubilee Year.  She died peacefully with two of our Sisters at her bedside.

Born on March 24, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, Mary Gannon entered the Congregation on August 14, 1955, made first profession of vows on April 22, 1957, and final profession on December 9, 1961.  Her missions included Our Lady’s Haven (1957-1958 & 1983-1985), Sacred Heart Home (1958-1961), St. Joseph Seminary (1961-1962), the Bishops’ Residence in Albany (1962-1967), Madonna Residence (1967-1971), Ozanam Hall (1971-1978), St. Joseph Nursing Home (1985-1987), and Garvey Manor (1987-2007).  Trained as an L.P.N., Sr. Virginia always ministered in the nursing department where she gave her all working with the residents. In September of 2007, she was transferred to St. Patrick’s Manor (where during the 1960’s she was previously stationed, although the dates are uncertain). In failing health, she was admitted to the nursing home on September 5, 2010, where she was lovingly provided for by the Sisters and staff.

Sr. Virginia was known for her “sweet tooth” and it was not unusual to hear her asking for cookies and candy.  She loved “all things Irish”, especially Irish music, and “all things Brooklyn”, often referring to Brooklyn as “God’s Country.”   Having been too ill to celebrate her Jubilee on earth, we rejoice that Sr. M. Virginia of St. Joseph is now enjoying a Diamond Jubilee celebration unlike any other, in the company of Mother Angeline and our beloved deceased Sisters in Carmel!
