Sister M. Irene Christopher, O.Carm. passed away peacefully on the afternoon of June 6, 2017 in the 52 nd year of her religious life.

Julia Margarette Keene was born on September 2, 1945 in North Wildwood, New Jersey to the late Walter and Margarette (Schellinger) Keene. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Walter, and remained close to her sister-in-law, Sandra, who had visited during her illness. She is survived by her twin brother, Elden.

Sr. Irene entered the Congregation on September 8, 1965, professed first vows on April 15, 1968 and perpetual vows on July 22, 1974.  Her early assignments were all very brief and included St. Joseph’s Seminary, Sacred Heart Home, Madonna Residence, and Josephine Baird Home.  Her lengthier assignments were Ozanam Hall (1971-1986), Little Flower Manor (1986-1998), Villa Teresa (1998-2006), and finally, Carmel Manor where she had been since November 10, 2006.

Sr. Irene worked in activities for most of her religious life, but she spent the past 3 years providing pastoral care to the residents. She loved music, especially country music, and played both the organ and guitar. She also loved word puzzles, birds and all animals, especially “bunnies”. Material things meant nothing to her and she gave away everything she received. May the Lord’s words “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth….but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” ring true for all of us, as it did for Sr. Irene Christopher, who knew and understood that “where your treasure is, there is your heart.”

Sr. Irene and I were both in The Mary Category. She was sweet and unassuming and even though I had not seen her in many years, Sr. Irene, as with the rest of the Marys. never strayed far from my thoughts. Rest in peace

Sister Irene and I were both in the Mary Category, and despite not having seen her for a while, I always had wonderful thoughts about her and her gentleness. She will be missed. Rest in Peace, Sister.
