Sister Joseph Angela, O.Carm. passed peacefully into eternal life on March 14, 2016 in the 67th year of religious life.  Having been blessed with “the gift of years” Sr. Angela’s death – even at 98 years old - was unexpected.  The Sisters were called when her condition changed during the night of March 13th, and Sr. M. Michelle Anne, Sr. Maureen McDonough, Sr. M. Brigid DeLourdes, and Sr. Bernadette Marie were at her bedside when the Lord took Sr. Angela to Himself.

Carolyn Christopher was born to Italian immigrants, Carl and Angeline (Caccese) Christopher, in Hazelton, PA on May 19, 1918.   She entered the Congregation on August 22, 1949, professed first vows on March 27, 1951 and made her final profession on December 8, 1955.  Sr. Joseph Angela was stationed in Ohio, Massachusetts, Iowa, Detroit, and Pennsylvania.  Of her many assignments, the lengthiest ones were Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg, PA (1972-1991), and Villa Teresa, Harrisburg, PA (1991-2006).  As time passed and her health failed, she transferred to St. Patrick’s Manor (2006) where she resided in the assisted living section of the Convent, and was later admitted to the nursing home.

Throughout her various Missions, Sister Angela ministered to the residents in Activities, Nursing, and Pastoral Care, although she is best remembered for the many years she spent as a Dietary Manager, where you could “eat off the floors in her kitchen.”  While at Garvey Manor Sr. Angela established the Third Order Lay Carmelites which continues to this day.  She was also very dedicated to her “home parish” is Hazelton, PA where she remained a member of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Many will also recall that she loved the Jersey Shore and fried oysters!

In recent years, Sr. Joseph Angela’s passion was to fundraise for contributions toward the construction of the Mother Angeline Heritage Center, and she personally gave what she could toward this endeavor.  No doubt Mother Angeline and all our deceased Sisters met Sr. M. Joseph Angela as she approached the shore of Heaven, and joyfully welcomed her with open arms!
