What constitutes Mission? What are the values that construct an organization and maintain its Mission?  What is true Leadership? Who are your Leaders? What are the requisites for Leadership?   These were some of the questions addressed at “Kinder than Kindness” From Legacy to Leadership Workshop held at Saint Teresa’s Motherhouse in Germantown, New York on March 18-20, 2013.  The workshop was sponsored by the Avila Institute of Gerontology, the educational arm of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm The event was attended by both Carmelite Sisters and Lay Staff administrators and assistant-administrators.  Our speaker this year was Catherine R. Seeley, MA, who founded the Caring Well Institute in Lowell, MA, a center for health care education and learning.  She served as a leader in healthcare and was Vice President of a hospital, and a member of the America College of Healthcare Executives. Catherine formerly served as the Director of Bereavement Services at Calvary Hospital in New York.  She is currently a national and international lecturer in transitions, loss and crisis management, clinical and corporate ethics, human development and communication.  During the course of the workshop, the “Path to Leadership” program was officially launched.  This online program was developed with the goal of enhancing leadership for the Mission according to the legacy and vision of the Carmelite Sisters’ Foundress,  Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa.  Twila Weiszbrod, DBA, MPA, BSHA, director of the Health Administration program at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine joined us by phone to provide detailed information on how to get started with this program. It was an exciting and full days of information, sharing, liturgy and fraternity, all geared to recommit to our legacy of caring for the aged and infirm through continuing education.
