Director of Development, Garvey Manor & Our Lady of the Alleghenies Residence Center

We were honored Monday evening to attend the Great Minds Gala in Washington DC, where our very own Sandy Shocker was awarded the National Exceptional Friend award from LeadingAge. Sandy embodies the mission and values of Garvey Manor through her selfless acts of kindness for the residents. Sandy’s mother was a resident at Garvey Manor and has since passed away, however, she continues to visit Garvey Manor on an almost weekly basis. Sandy comes in on her own time to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and special resident moments. Known among residents for the special touches, like festive napkins and table decorations, that she brings to celebrations — not to mention her festive garb and sparkly shoes — Sandy makes a difference in the quality of life of the residents. Sandy has taught us that you don’t need to move mountains to make a difference for our elders, you just need to show love for one another.

It should not come as a big surprise that St. Patrick’s Residence, a nursing and rehabilitation facility for the elderly in Naperville, holds a party on St. Patrick’s Day every year. Labeled as “Come to Mom’s House,” with the color green on vivid display everywhere, the party offers lively entertainment, usually including Irish musicians, Irish and Scottish dancers, children’s games, face painting, food and raffle drawings. To top it off, St. Patrick himself even makes an appearance. READ FULL ARTICLE

The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word graciously welcomed Sr. Peter, Sr. Michelle and Mother Mark to Villa de Matel while they were training potential Mother Angeline Ministers in Houston, Texas. The Sisters co-sponsor the Christus Health System of more than 600 centers in the US and internationally. They certainly went out of their way to make the Sisters feel at home on their lovely campus.

Training sessions for the Mother Angeline Ministries was held across town at St. Dominic Village, Houston's only Catholic retirement community. It too had a beautiful campus which encompasses a residence for retired priests, independent living facility, assisted living facility, and skilled nursing facility. They also have Angel House which provides temporary home for patients or family members receiving treatment in the Texas Medical Center across the street.
